OpenAI dots by OpenAI

Your dot reads the mentions before you wake up

Connect your computer to your dot. The dot starts a Codex task there, Codex calls BuzzTake, and your custom rules decide when the dot must ask you.

OpenAI dots, sample run. A dot's chat at 7:00. The dot reads X notifications through a Codex task on the user's computer, reports 14 mentions and three questions, and asks to send three drafted replies. The user presses Send, and the replies change from waiting to replied.

What OpenAI dots can do in your social accounts

A dot works for you through the day and keeps saved schedules. It can create local Codex tasks on the one personal computer you connect to it, and a Codex task can use every MCP server in ~/.codex/config.toml.

Add BuzzTake there once. The dot can then ask Codex to read your notifications, search for your product name or draft replies, and bring the result back to you in the dot.

Custom rules set what the dot does alone. Reading is safe to run without asking; a reply or a post should wait for you, and OpenAI's rule types cover both.

OpenAI does not say whether a dot can use a custom MCP plugin. This page uses the route OpenAI documents: a local Codex task on your connected computer, with BuzzTake in Codex's config.toml.

It works on X, LinkedIn, Instagram and Threads, and on every other platform BuzzTake connects. Each action is one tool, named as in the actions reference.

Jobs for OpenAI dots

Say it in plain words. These are prompts that work, and the calls they make.

  1. A mention digest at 7:00

Every morning the dot starts a Codex task that reads your notifications and searches for your name, then sends you the five that need an answer.

Every day at 7:00, start a Codex task on my computer that reads my X and LinkedIn notifications with BuzzTake. Send me the five that need an answer.

    2 × read_notifications8 credits ($0.08)

  2. Drafted replies, sent on your word

The dot drafts a reply to each question. A custom rule makes it ask before anything goes out, so you answer with yes or an edit.

Draft a reply to each question in today's mentions. Ask me before you send any of them.

    3 × reply24 credits ($0.24)

  3. A check on direct messages

At noon the dot looks at the Instagram inbox and tells you about new messages from customers, with a short summary of each.

At noon on weekdays, read my Instagram conversations with BuzzTake and tell me about new messages from customers.

    1 × list_conversations, 3 × read_conversation16 credits ($0.16)

  4. A weekly post from your notes

On Friday the dot turns the week's notes into a LinkedIn draft and sends it for review in BuzzTake.

On Fridays, turn my notes from this week into a LinkedIn post. Save it as a BuzzTake draft and submit it for review.

1 × create_content10 credits for each draft that goes out

Set up OpenAI dots

Do these steps on the computer you will connect to the dot. Codex reads one config file for the CLI, the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app.

  1. Add BuzzTake to Codex

Add the server to ~/.codex/config.toml, or run codex mcp add buzztake --url https://mcp.buzztake.com/mcp.

    ~/.codex/config.toml
    [mcp_servers.buzztake]
    url = "https://mcp.buzztake.com/mcp"
  2. Sign Codex in

BuzzTake opens in your browser. Sign in, check the permissions and select Allow.

    Terminal
    codex mcp login buzztake
  3. Connect the computer to the dot

In the ChatGPT app on this computer, open the dot's profile. Under Computers, find Your computer, select Allow access and confirm. A dot connects to one personal computer at a time.

  4. Set the rules

Open Settings, Personalization, Custom rules. Set reading your notifications to Take action without asking, and replies and posts to Ask before taking action.

  5. Give the dot the job

Name BuzzTake and Codex in the request, so the dot starts a local task.

    To the dot
Every day at 7:00, start a Codex task on my computer that uses BuzzTake to read my X notifications. Tell me which ones need an answer.

Ways to connect OpenAI dots

The routes that reach BuzzTake from OpenAI dots, and how well each one fits.

Through another agentBest fit

A local Codex task on the connected computer, with BuzzTake in config.toml. Codex signs in to BuzzTake with OAuth and renews the token.

Remote MCP, API keyWorks

Codex can send a key from an environment variable instead, which suits a computer where nobody is at the keyboard.

~/.codex/config.toml
[mcp_servers.buzztake]
url = "https://mcp.buzztake.com/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "BUZZTAKE_API_KEY"
REST APIWorks

The Codex task can also run curl in its shell. The sandbox may block its network calls; MCP needs no such exception.

POST /v1/accounts/{id}/actions
curl https://api.buzztake.com/v1/accounts/$ACCOUNT_ID/actions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $BUZZTAKE_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"type": "post", "text": "Version 2.4 is out.", "wait": 60}'
Remote MCP, OAuth sign-inNot tested

BuzzTake as a custom MCP plugin that the dot uses itself. OpenAI does not say whether dots can use one.

What it costs

BuzzTake charges in prepaid credits for the actions it runs. One credit is one US cent.

Credits for each job on this page
JobCreditsUSD
A mention digest at 7:008$0.08
Drafted replies, sent on your word24$0.24
A check on direct messages16$0.16
A weekly post from your notes10 per post$0.10 per post

A post, a quote or a message is 10 credits, a reply 8, a like or a follow 3, and a read or a search 4. A planned post costs nothing until it goes out. Reads are charged when they succeed, and a write that fails before the page changes is refunded.

OpenAI dots's model use is billed by OpenAI, not by BuzzTake. Every price is on the pricing page, and the rules are in Credits.

Approvals and safety

A person can approve before anything goes out, and every action is recorded.

A dot has four kinds of custom rule: take action without asking, take action when you say so, ask before taking action, and hand off to you. Your ChatGPT app permissions also apply to the dot.

Put reads on take action without asking and every reply, message and post on ask before taking action. Pending requests are in the dot's profile, under Activity, in the desktop app.

  • Ask for drafts when a person must check first. create_content puts the post on the calendar, submit_for_review sends it to a reviewer, and it goes out only after the approval.
  • Give the agent an API key without the content_publish permission. It can then plan drafts and send them for review, and it cannot post by itself.
  • BuzzTake records every action: who asked, through which key, on which account, what the page returned and what it cost.
  • A sign-in step that BuzzTake cannot finish, such as a 2FA code, becomes a challenge. The agent asks you for the code, or gives you a link to a live browser where you answer it.
  • Only an owner or an administrator can allow an OAuth client. Disconnect it under Developers in the app, and its token stops working.

More in Approvals and Reports and audit.

Limits

  • OpenAI lists dots for Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 accounts for people over 18 outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out, and in Enterprise an administrator turns dots on.
  • The computer must be online with the ChatGPT app open while the dot works there.
  • An action tool waits up to 120 seconds for its result. A longer action comes back with its id, and get_action follows it to the end.
  • The MCP server runs up to 8 requests at a time for one key or sign-in. Above that it answers 429 with Retry-After, and the client tries again.
  • One organization connects up to 200 accounts.
  • The platforms set their own pace. When one asks an account to slow down, the action ends with rate_limited, and a write that failed before the page changed is refunded.

Troubleshooting

Every error code and its fix is in Errors and challenges.

The dot answers without BuzzTake
Name Codex and BuzzTake in the request so the dot starts a local Codex task. Check that codex mcp list shows buzztake on that computer.
The task stops at a sign-in
Run codex mcp login buzztake on the computer once. The token is then renewed without a browser.
The client says the server refused the token (401)
The sign-in expired or was revoked, or the API key is wrong. Sign in again from the client, or make a new key under Developers.
An action stops at needs_input
The platform asked for a code. Give the code to the agent so it calls answer_challenge, or open the challenge's sign_in_url and answer in the live browser.
The answer is insufficient_credits
The balance is lower than the price, and nothing was queued. A post needs 10 credits. Top up, then ask again.
The answer is unsupported
The platform has no such action. The error lists the actions it has, and the generic browser action can do the rest step by step.
An account shows signed_out
Its session ended and no stored password could sign it in again. Ask the agent for a sign-in link with get_sign_in_link and open it, or reconnect the account in the app.

OpenAI dots questions

Can an OpenAI dot use BuzzTake directly?
OpenAI does not document custom MCP plugins in dots. The documented route is a local Codex task on your connected computer, and Codex uses BuzzTake through its MCP config.
Will the dot post without asking me?
Not if you set a custom rule. Ask before taking action makes the dot wait for your answer before a reply or a post, and reads can run without asking.
Does my computer have to stay on?
Yes, for this route. The dot runs the Codex task on your computer, which must be online with the ChatGPT app open. BuzzTake itself runs in the cloud.
What does a morning check cost?
Reading notifications is 4 credits per account, so X and LinkedIn are 8 credits a day. A reply is 8 credits when it goes out.
